Railway papers are Computer Based Tests. There is no OMR sheet, no rough space on the question paper, and no going back through pages to check what you skipped. Candidates who have only ever practised on paper lose real marks to the interface itself in the first twenty minutes.
Our tests are taken on a computer in the same format, so the screen, the question palette, the review marker and the clock are all familiar long before the actual exam. It sounds like a small thing. It is worth several marks to a nervous first timer.
Normalisation. Railway exams run across many shifts and scores are normalised, which means your raw mark is not your final mark. You cannot control the difficulty of your shift. You can control how many questions you attempt accurately, which is the only thing normalisation rewards.
Number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, mensuration and elementary geometry.
Analogy, series, coding and decoding, syllogism, Venn diagrams, direction sense, blood relations and simple puzzles.
Physics, chemistry and life science at class ten level. This is the section most candidates neglect and it is entirely learnable from NCERT within a few months.

Clearing the CBT is not the end, and this is where candidates who prepared only for the paper get caught.
Male candidates are required to lift and carry thirty five kilograms over a hundred metres in two minutes in one chance, and to run a thousand metres in four minutes and fifteen seconds. Female candidates carry twenty kilograms over the same distance and run a thousand metres in five minutes and forty seconds. We tell every Group D student these numbers on day one, because four months of running practice cannot be started in the final week.
Railway medical standards are strict, particularly on eyesight, and they differ by post. ALP requires distant vision of six by six in each eye without glasses, which rules out a great many candidates who only discover this after clearing two computer based tests. Check your eyesight before you choose the post, not after.
Document verification. Name spelling differences between your mark sheet, Aadhaar and application form are a genuinely common reason for rejection at the final stage. Bring your documents to the office and we will check them against your form free of charge.

It depends on your qualification. Group D if you have passed class ten, NTPC if you have completed 12th or a degree, and ALP if you hold an ITI certificate or a diploma. Many candidates are eligible for more than one and should apply for all of them, since the syllabus is largely shared.
Very close, with NTPC set at a higher level and carrying more general awareness. A single batch prepares you for both, which is why students here routinely sit both papers in the same year.
It varies by post and it is strictest for ALP, which requires six by six vision in each eye without glasses. NTPC clerical posts are far more relaxed. Find out where you stand before you invest months in a post you cannot be medically cleared for.
On computer, in the same format as the real CBT. Practising only on paper leaves you fighting the interface on exam day, which costs marks that have nothing to do with what you know.
Railway exams run in many shifts of differing difficulty, so scores are adjusted to make them comparable. You cannot influence it. Attempt accurately, leave the questions you are unsure of, and the adjustment takes care of itself.
